Adult Communication Therapy FAQ

Answers to common questions about adult speech and language therapy

It's never too late! While earlier intervention often leads to better outcomes, adults can continue to make improvements years after their initial injury. The brain's neuroplasticity allows for continued recovery with appropriate stimulation and practice, even years later.

Aphasia is a language disorder that affects the ability to communicate, usually caused by stroke or brain injury. It can impact speaking, understanding, reading, and writing. Treatment focuses on improving language skills while also teaching strategies to communicate effectively using remaining abilities.

Duration varies greatly depending on the condition, severity, and individual factors. Some people see improvement within weeks, while others benefit from ongoing therapy for months or years. Progressive conditions may require long-term support, while stroke recovery often shows the most rapid improvement in the first year.

Apraxia of speech affects the brain's ability to plan and coordinate speech movements, while dysarthria involves weakness or lack of coordination in the muscles used for speech. Both can occur after stroke or brain injury, but they require different treatment approaches.

Most insurance plans, including Medicare, cover speech therapy when it's medically necessary following stroke, brain injury, or other medical conditions. We work directly with insurance companies and can help verify your benefits and navigate the approval process.

Absolutely! Family involvement is crucial for successful recovery. We provide training for family members and caregivers on how to support communication at home, create successful communication environments, and reinforce therapy techniques in daily life.

Your first session will include a comprehensive assessment of your communication strengths and challenges, discussion of your goals and priorities, and initial treatment planning. We'll also explain your condition and answer any questions you and your family may have.

For progressive conditions, we focus on maintaining communication abilities as long as possible while also preparing for future needs. This may include voice amplification, AAC technology training, and strategies to adapt as the condition progresses. Early intervention is key.

Yes! Many of our adult speech therapists are also trained in dysphagia (swallowing disorder) treatment. Swallowing and speech problems often occur together after stroke or brain injury, and we can address both areas in coordinated treatment.

Frustration is completely normal and expected. Communication disorders can be incredibly challenging emotionally. We work closely with you to set realistic goals, celebrate small victories, and provide emotional support throughout your recovery journey. We also connect families with support groups when appropriate.
