Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common questions about pediatric speech therapy

Consider scheduling a speech-language evaluation if your child is not meeting expected communication milestones, is difficult to understand, becomes frustrated when trying to communicate, has a limited vocabulary, has difficulty understanding or following age-appropriate directions, or if you have concerns about their speech, language, or social communication skills.

If you have concerns, trust your instincts. A speech-language evaluation can help determine whether your child's communication skills are developing as expected and provide recommendations for the next steps.

Speech therapy can begin as soon as a communication concern is identified. Most children should have at least 50 words by age 2 and be beginning to combine words into simple phrases.

If your child is not meeting expected communication milestones or you have concerns about their speech or language development, a speech-language evaluation is recommended. Early intervention often leads to the best outcomes, but children of all ages can benefit from speech therapy.

Duration varies greatly depending on the child's needs, severity of the delay, and how consistently therapy recommendations are followed at home. Some children need only a few months of intervention, while others may benefit from ongoing support. We regularly review progress and adjust treatment plans accordingly.

Absolutely! We believe children learn best when they are engaged and having fun. Our therapists use play-based, motivating activities tailored to your child's interests, making each session both enjoyable and meaningful. Many children are excited to come to speech therapy because they know they'll learn, play, and succeed in a supportive environment.

Your involvement is one of the most important factors in your child's success.

We'll teach you simple, practical strategies to encourage communication during everyday routines like meals, playtime, bath time, reading, and car rides. By making communication part of daily life, your child has more opportunities to practice new skills in a natural and meaningful way.

Most insurance plans cover speech therapy when medically necessary. We work with many major insurance providers and can help verify your benefits. We also offer private pay options and can discuss financial assistance programs when needed.

A speech delay affects how children produce sounds and words (pronunciation and clarity), while a language delay affects understanding and use of words to communicate ideas. Many children have both types of delays, and our evaluation will identify specific areas of need.

Yes! We have bilingual therapists and understand typical bilingual language development. Being bilingual doesn't cause speech delays, and we can provide therapy that supports both languages while respecting your family's cultural values.

Session frequency depends on your child's needs and goals. Typically, children receive therapy 1-2 times per week for 30-60 minutes per session. We'll work with your family's schedule to find the optimal frequency for progress.

This is very common! Our therapists are experts at building rapport with hesitant children. We start slowly, follow the child's lead, and use their interests to engage them. Most children warm up within a few sessions once they realize therapy is fun.
